Meet Alyssa

Alyssa Cohen, MA, LMSW is a Licensed Masters Social Worker pending her Licensed Clinical Social Work certification.

Originally from Chicago, Alyssa moved to Austin during the summer of 2017 to continue her work in therapy. Alyssa received her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and her Masters degree in Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. Alyssa practiced therapy with adolescents for over a year at a Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Treatment Center in Chicago focusing primarily on anxiety, depression, co- occurring disorders, and substance use. Since having moved to Austin, Alyssa has had an opportunity to work in various treatment facilities at multiple levels of care including: Intensive Outpatient, Inpatient Psychiatric, and Residential Treatment Centers with both adolescent and adult populations.

Alyssa’s approach to therapy is client centered: clients are the experts on their lives and determine the direction and depth that therapy takes. Through a strengths-based, family systems, and solutions-focused lens, Alyssa guides clients to identify their strengths and relationship within their family systems to develop treatment plans that accomplish their goals. Through Cognitive

Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Alyssa assists clients in exploring relationships among thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to aid in discovering dysfunctional thought patterns leading to self-destructive behaviors and beliefs. Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Alyssa supports clients through developing skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation with the goal of moving clients towards a life involving the capacity for experiencing joy and freedom.

Alyssa is thrilled to join GT Therapy Group as an Associate Therapist to support clients in their accomplishing their goals.

Outside of her work as a counselor, Alyssa enjoys yoga and is a Certified Yoga Instructor. She also enjoys reading, cooking, art, spending time with her fiancé and puppy, Benny, exploring Austin in addition to traveling to new places.
