Justin helps individuals, couples, families, and groups in navigating through:
Gender/sexual identity – “Who am I? Where do I fit?”
Life transitions/events – school graduation, “empty nesting”, loss of partner/loved one, etc.
Impacts of substance use
Justin Givan-Gonzales, LCSW, is deeply passionate about supporting individuals in reclaiming their voice and reconnecting with their inner joy and peace. Shame, guilt, fear, sadness, and trauma often cause a significant and detrimental impact on how individuals navigate life. These feelings and emotions can create a barrier which locks people into a world riddled with anxiety, depression, isolation, and complacency. Much of Justin’s work utilizes a framework which explores these feelings and emotions as well as the precipitating events. Through this journey, Justin supports individuals as they reclaim their power, voice, and self-appreciation.
Over the last two years, Justin has refined and enhanced his skills as a therapist working with individuals living with HIV and struggling with substance use. In this experience, Justin has worked primarily with men who self-identify as gay or queer as well as individuals who identify as transgender. Prior to this, Justin served as the counselor for a private high school in which he supported students as they prepared for their next milestone: adulthood, college, careers, etc. Justin has also worked with adolescent females living in a residential treatment facility where he facilitated individual and group connection thus supporting the individuals as they traversed through their experienced traumas and challenges. Justin utilizes his professional and personal experiences in walking alongside individuals as they navigate their journey. He embraces his identity as a person-centered therapist, fiercely driven to support individuals in rediscovering their love for themselves.
While Justin’s professional background and experience are within the LGBTQIA community, he is enthusiastic about working with adolescents. It is the tween and teen age groups that initially ignited his zest for counseling as he recognizes the struggles that young people experience as they navigate through the middle and high school years and prepare for adulthood. Justin has a gift for connecting with tweens, teens and their parents. Regardless of gender, age, affiliation, background, or culture, Justin is resolutely committed to working with and supporting all individuals as the challenges of anxiety, depression, diminished self-worth, fear, and disempowerment do not discriminate.
Justin’s education includes a Bachelor’s in Business Management from Simpson College and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. Justin is a native Iowan but is thrilled to call Austin home.
