Learn and Volunteer!

Volunteering doesn't have to be torture! :)

Today’s youth spends a lot of time surfing the web, either checking to see who’s posted what on the various social media sites or researching for a history project. Although there are a lot of distracting websites, there are also some very cool websites that serve more than one purpose. One such website is FreeRice, a website that provides academic games in several subjects such as english, chemistry, geography, and SAT test preparation. For every question answered correctly in a game, FreeRice donates 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme in an effort to end world hunger. The games are perfect for middle school and high school students looking for new ways to study. Students will be able to master new material and help a good cause at the same time.

Teen can build on their experience with FreeRice to volunteer in their community. Volunteering is a good way to become involved in the community and serves as a way to meet other people with similar interests. In addition to this, volunteering helps students build the extracurricular section of their college resumes and applications. Teens can check out the Capital Area Food Bank, the Austin Parks Foundation, Keep Austin Beautiful, and the Austin Humane Society for volunteering opportunities. More locations can be found here.
