Wean the Tween

How can you help your tween develop indepence, responsibility and a sense of self-efficacy? Here are some steps to help you take a step back and encourage her to increase her ability to think and do for herself!

1. Don’t correct! If she isn’t loading the dishwasher how YOU want her to, just let her be. At least she is loading. You can provide a helpful hint sometime later. Correct and perfect right away might run her off!
2. Give her a manageable list of chores with her input (she will be more willing to do work if she comes up with some of the chores herself)
3. Consider giving her a “salary” for work done around the house (this also helps her learn how to budget and pay for things on her own so you don’t become her ATM)
