Welcoming Lizet Ortuño!
Hello everyone,
I’m happy to introduce myself to the GT community! My name is Lizet (Lee-set) Ortuño, and I’m a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) with a passion for exploring identity, culture, and the human experience. As a Chicana, I embrace both my Indigenous racial roots and Mexican cultural background, which play an important role in how I approach therapy. My path into mental health has been driven by a deep commitment to understanding and supporting those navigating complex dynamics like systemic oppression, generational trauma, cultural identity, and mental health challenges. I’m here to help people work through these intersections, offering a compassionate space for healing and growth.
I earned my Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2024. During my studies, I had the special opportunity to gain clinical experience in Oaxaca, México, where I worked closely with children and their families. My time there deepened my understanding of cultural dynamics and strengthened my dedication to serving diverse communities. Beyond the work, I loved spending time enjoying all the delicious food and visiting the nearby tianguis with friends. It definitely added joy to my experience. I’m excited to bring all of these experiences into my practice and contribute to the well-being of the GT community.
In my practice, I’m particularly interested in highlighting and advancing Indigenous Ways of Knowing (IWK) within the mental health field. These ancestral approaches have deeply influenced my understanding of healing, community, and the importance of integrating spiritual perspectives when appropriate. Additionally, I’m here to support sober and sober-curious individuals. Having been sober for three years, I’ve found that these ancestral ways of healing played a crucial role in helping me find my way.
Outside of my professional life, I’m passionate about taking nature-driven road trips, which allow me to explore new landscapes and deepen my sense of interconnectedness with the natural world. I also love discovering new music, which is a constant source of inspiration and joy for me. Attending lowrider cruises is another favorite activity; these events offer me a meaningful way to connect with community and celebrate Chicanx car culture and history.
